Renaissance woman who dares to speak
Harshly at the castle wall
The king cares not for your suffering
Off you go to the town square
The jailer awaits your arrival
You may sit awhile

Seeing that chair and knowing it’s not an empty prop makes me feel sorrow for every woman who has been punished for speaking truth to power. And for every man who has also had the courage to do so. Powerful honoring our sisters from the past and those who continue to struggle in the present.

Oh! This is so harsh and yet this was how it was! Your words bring home the reality of what many think of as the fairytale era . Well done you 💜💜

Strong stuff. Your poem is remarkable. 👏
Where on earth is this torture chair? Who thought up this monstrosity, may I ask?

Thank you, Lesley! I took the photo at a Renaissance festival’s medieval torture museum. I understand the “iron chair” was once used in Europe as a torture device and was likely used in other parts of the world as well.
