Stormy Start

It’s here
sweltering heat
high humidity blends
sky blackens with summer rain storms
brewing
at the airport ready to go
on long planned vacation
our flight delayed
we wait

Pairs in Perspective

A pair of photos showing a fungus covered tree stump. The first focused on the fungus covered stump and the second featuring the fungus.

It is difficult to discern the size of this glass bottle sculpture until you place a person in its center.

These aquatic plants are part of a much larger picture.

A pair of perspectives of Mt. Vesuvius: The first scene taken from the modern streets of Sorrento and the second from the ancient roads of Pompeii.

M is for Mojo

What madness!
Masterful minds
Manifesting M
Mesmerizing magic indeed
I mull over the meaning
Seated under massive moss masked trees
Feeling minuscule yet mighty
A marvelous mystical moment!

Turkey Vulture

Widespread throughout North America, these birds are known for several unappealing characteristics, including eating roadkill, vomiting on animals (e.g. humans) that get too close, and defecating on their own feet to cool themselves. Despite these traits, one cannot help but be intrigued by their large wingspan, as they gracefully soar on thermals in the sky, contrasted by their awkward appearance and hobble-hopping gait on land.

Bigfoot

A drive through mountains and valleys
A walk through woodlands and swamp
My dad listens, his eyes watch
for elusive beings known as Sasquatch

W3 Prompt #116: Wea’ve Written Weekly poet of the week, “little ol’”David himself, prompts us to write about something that we find amusing.

Rocking Marshside

Smoldering heat quashed
Submerged in cool marsh water
‘Til distant sun dips
Midsummer darkness beckons
Rocking fine waterside chair

Shadows of the night
Tall reeds silhouette against
Star sparkled water
No cutting the grass out there
Immersed in protective brine

One Sweltering Day

Image credit: Ryoji Iwata on Unsplash.

It is a sweltering day.  I had expected to be inundated with calls requesting taxi service, but my phone remains silent.  Why walk in such scorching heat?   While I generally believe that every day unfurls as it must, the need to put food on the table requires action.  Perhaps I will  drive through the city.  Someone is sure to flag me down there.

Well, here I am on virtually empty streets in a city that houses millions.  Where is everybody?  I am suddenly overcome with a sense of dread.  I spot a couple of locals on the sidewalk and make way over to them.  They wearily track my approach, then turn and run!  What the…?  I park at the curb and tune the radio to the local news.  I feel my heart drop into my stomach, as the day unfurls into a nightmare.

Touring Miami

Thousands of people flock to South Florida every winter to escape the cold and enjoy its subtropical climate. Aside from being a traffic-packed, beach-crowded, long-lined mess, Miami offers a wonderful art scene, multi-cultural diversity and ample opportunity for over-the-top consumerism.

Le Corbusier by Xavier Veilhan

To preserve wildlife and the sanity of city dwellers, it is easy to find respite in nature at one of the many parks and preserves dispersed in and around the city.

Winding Down

Days spent
Running in circles
How meaningless it all seems
Comprehension surfaces
