Desperate Cry

Caged bird, I hear your song -
sad and lamenting.

How I wish I could mend your mutilated wings
so you may fly high above the hills
over which your tune disseminates.

Free birds hear your fearful trill
while mindlessly soaring among the clouds,
but a free bird cannot truly fathom
a desperate cry for freedom.

Written for dVerse host Kim’s Poetics: Dead Poets Society

“Your challenge today is to read three poems by dead poets and respond to ONE of them in your own way.”

I chose to write a poem in response to Caged Bird by Maya Angelou 1928 (St. Louis, Missouri) – 2014 (Winston-Salem, North Carolina).

  1. Your poem is an exquisite cage holding bird and sad song, Jennifer. The alliterative lines ‘How I wish I could mend your mutilated wings’ flutter between sigh and moan, and I love the couplet:
‘…a free bird cannot truly fathom
    a desperate cry for freedom’
