Almost twenty years ago, we sold our first house and bought an acre of land out in the country. Old farmland was converted into a quiet suburban neighborhood where my husband built our new home. At the entrance to our new neighborhood sits a large working farm. Over the past twenty years, the city has worked its way into suburbia and the small adjacent towns are rapidly transforming into small cities of their own. Each year the neighboring farm harvests corn or soybeans from their large fields. Each year following the harvest, I hope beyond hope not to discover a “For Sale” sign.

It’s sad how we are eating up all our land. But there are more and more people, and too many want their own piece of it. When I was growing up, one of our houses was built on old farmland, but there was also still a holdout, a working farm behind our street of houses. I wonder if they have survived the past 60 years. I hope so. (K)

Me too! There is something peaceful and nostalgic about fields of farmland. At some point, traditional farms will likely be a reflection of the past, as hydroponic farming and other scientific/technological advances in food production become mainstream.

I know exactly what you mean. I’m so glad we purchased the adjoining land to our farm all those years ago. We dreaded the thought of our rural view changing.

I am so nostalgic for real harvest and communities – so sad. I just had a break in Wales, seeing the animals and nature was very soul healing … I would love to see things rewind a bit – but I doubt that will happen … I hope the farms stay productive enough to stay …..
