Biophilia

Deep in the urban jungle
A yearning to commune with nature
Hidden gems are interspersed between buildings
Well worn nature trails and picturesque waterways
Lined with dense greenery and abundant wildlife
Calling the biophiliac home
An opportunity to tap into the natural world
A breath shared among the green trees
A toe dipped in rippling blue water
A hard reset before plodding back to urbanity

    1. Dear Jennifer Russo,

I concur with Carol Anne, and I have very much enjoyed reading your excellent poem, whose title “Biophilia” piques my interest even more.

Beauty is not entirely subjective and is not just in the eye of the beholder. There is strong, unshakable evolutionary basis for our sense, feeling, perception and conception of beauty. In addition, there are evolutionary bases in people’s sense of morality and in their behaviours. You will find a great deal of new understandings in multidisciplinary fields such as sociobiology, evolutionary psychology and behavioural sciences, epigenetics, brain and cognitive sciences, gene-culture coevolution, biophilia and many more. . . . .

Indeed, the late Edward O Wilson, whom we both respect, had proposed the idea of biophilia to explain and encapsulate such matters. You may have already known that Wilson’s seminal book “The Diversity of Life” has given us the terms “biodiversity” and “biophilia”. I have owned a copy of the book for 20 odd years. That we can learn a great deal about ourselves and Nature via the notion of “Biophilia” as first proposed by Edward O Wilson is in some ways both refreshing and revolutionary.

One of my most favourite books of Edward O Wilson is none other than “Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge”, which is a national bestseller, not to mention that Wilson has received many fellowships, awards and honours, including two Pulitzer prizes. I love the word “Consilience”, which I have used in my very long “About” page.

My special and academically written post entitled “We have Paleolithic Emotions; Medieval Institutions; and God-like Technology” is a detailed and expansive tribute to Wilson. The post has been much improved and expanded. The direct link is:

I welcome your input there since I am curious to know what you make of my said post as well as your perspectives on those matters discussed in my post.

Once again, thank you for sharing your poem. Wishing both you and Carol a productive 2024 and a wonderful springtime doing or enjoying whatever that satisfies you the most, whether intellectually, physically or spiritually!

      Yours sincerely,

      1. Thank you, SoundEagle! I must admit that the concept of biophilia and Edward O. Wilson are new to me. I am certainly one who craves time with nature, especially after a prolonged period in an urban environment. I have scanned through your in-depth and fascinating publication that you linked to this post. I look forward to reviewing in more detail when time permits.

      3. Dear Jennifer,

For your information, there is also the exact opposite of biophilia, namely, biophobia. I have entertained some highly plausible dystopian scenarios with significant risks for the future of humanity. In addition, I often explore the intersections of art and science, of public and private spaces, of the cultural and the technological. Whilst I concede that technology offers enormous unexplored potential allowing emerging artists to express themselves in unprecedented ways, I do have certain concerns and caveats regarding science “reproducing” reality and artists representing it. In a special post, I have endeavoured to give a very good inkling of the kind of society that humans might be heading towards. Looking into the future, here is an entry in my sociology, philosophical anthropology and cultural history journal entitled “Facing the Noise & Music: Playgrounds for Biophobic Citizens“, published at

Pushing forward another 50 years or (much) less, we could indeed end up in the scenario as described in my said post. As you can discover in the said post, there will be plenty of far-reaching ramifications in multiple domains of human life, some of which are irreversible. Should you decide to peruse my said post, I look forward to reading your feedback there. The post takes the perspective of sociology, philosophical anthropology and cultural history.

      4. Dear Jennifer,

Since you have been “one who craves time with nature, especially after a prolonged period in an urban environment”, my post entitled “🎧 Facing the Noise & Music: Grey Barriers and Green Frontiers of Sound, Society and Environment 🔊🏡🏞” could be of great relevance or interest to you. In the post, I introduce the ISEA Model that I have devised to analyse and describe the Instrumental, Spiritual, Pro-Environment and Pro-Animal/Plant perspectives affecting people’s worldviews, relationships and sociopolitical praxis. The ISEA model is an analytical model to examine the extant differences in people’s outlooks, behaviours and reasonings towards other beings (including non-humans) and their surroundings.
