We are the future
Smart and courageous females
We shall not be deterred
There are those that recognize our power
Feel our strength
Appreciate our potential
They impart their wisdom
Nurture us with love and truth
We absorb knowledge like sponges
Watch us soar to great heights

My beautiful boy
Into the eyes of his own
Ground in profound love
May their bond afford them strength
Through life’s perpetual flux
This week’s TankaTuesday Poetry Challenge is hosted by Willow. Willow prompts us to “[w]rite a syllabic poem on how a piece of music inspires you or what it says to you.” I chose Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) by John Lennon.
W3 Prompt #133: Wea’ve Written Weekly poet of the week, Carol Anne, prompts us to write a haiku, tanka, or senryu incorporating the word “strength”.

What tap-taps on the palm tree?
It’s red head bobbing greedily
Inside the tree a hole is pecked
Within which hides treasured insects
What shriek-shrieks assertively?
Wanting a taste of the bounty
The woodpecker is not deterred
Ignoring the cries of the coveting bird

He dwelled in darkness
Home from Vietnam
The woop woop of helicopter blades
Reverberated in his head
Long after he was grounded
Nightmares suppressed by intoxicants
Unable to escape addiction
From rock bottom
A shimmer of light
A ray of hope
He grabbed hold and pulled
Out of despair
Into the arms of his family
Who waited so long
For him to come home
W3 Prompt #132: Wea’ve Written Weekly poet of the week, Sheila, prompts us to write a poem of exactly 64 words incorporating any form of “dark” and “light”.

Eugi’s Moonwashed Weekly Prompt – Writer’s Choice*

A rustic “treehouse” hostel in Brunswick, Georgia provided an amazing overnight stay for a family roadtrip down to Florida. Not far off the highway, but deep into the woods, we were transported to the silence of the forest.
We stayed in a two story cabin – kids upstairs. The walls were strategically placed to block the view and sounds from the common areas. The rest of the walls were screened with views of the forest.

A dreaded night hike to the composting toilets became an enchanting stroll under the stars. I wish I had had time to take advantage of the outdoor bathtub the next morning.

We did manage a morning hike to the lake before heading back to the sounds of the road.

Lens-Artists Challenge #323 – Silence hosted by Egidio.

I footed it up a steep mountain
Towarding the rocky cliffs
The bird highered and lowered
In and out of view
Soaring in its quest for prey
I camera-shot from above and below
All photos eighty-sixed
But one
W3 Prompt #131: Wea’ve Written Weekly poet of the week, Melissa, prompts us to choose five words from her list and use them as verbs. I chose foot, toward, high, camera and six.

A hike through the Belly of the Dragon
Promises an eerie experience
The hiking partner takes it up a notch
Speaking of earthquakes and falling rock
Bright sunshine awaits the other side
Beautiful cliff faces turn ominous
As hiking partner seeks out mountain lions

Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt #387 – Unexpected
My brother and his kids are visiting from abroad. The teenage siblings have been extremely cooperative with activities designed to appease the four year old. We have been talking of hay rides and farm animals at the pumpkin patch, but today the oldest will be surprised by a trip to the amusement park.
