Red-Masked Parakeets

Exotic feral birds we are
Transported from afar
Our cage doors left ajar
No longer helpless

Watch us cuddle in a tree
Hear us banter merrily
Peaking curiosity
Helpless in our presence

I. J.’s Birds of the Week Invitation LXII

Belonging to Nature?

Microcosms of the universe;
even in ashes or dust
we shall be
one with nature.
Yet…
We are intruders.
Destroyers of habitat,
polluters of sky and sea.
Determined to disturb nature’s balance
for our own gratification;
to our own demise.
We don’t belong.

W3 Prompt #105: Wea’ve Written Weekly poet of the week, Destiny, prompts us to: “Compose a free verse poem of no more than 12 lines on the theme of ‘belonging’.”

Pets and Kids

I love animals of all kinds. I have had pet chickens, rabbits, fish and various reptiles, but cats are my all time favorite. I have never owned a dog due to my unpredictable work schedule and travel. Dogs definitely require a lot of consistency, care and attention. So I love on the dogs of my family and friends.

Kid Love

What can be cuter than watching a little kid interact with their pet? (Assuming they are not riding it, poking it, prodding it or otherwise terrorizing it). My grandson refers to his dog as “my brother.” He has an actual brother on the way, so we’ll see how that goes…

Kids bring out the kid in me. My two partners in crime are featured below. Cousins that love each other (and fight with each other) as if siblings.

A Renga

Colleen challenges us this week to write a cooperative poem in the form of a renga.

Colleen’s hokku:

an empty attic
the sound of April showers
thunderous rumblings

My wakiku:

spring river’s vigorous dance
raindrops pelting down drum beats

My hokku:

seaweed washed ashore
retreating spring tide at dawn
shells strewn across sand

Colleen will add her wakiku in the comments of this post.

Fritillary Butterflies

Great Spangled Fritillary
Photo capture: North Carolina Mountains

From mountains to sea
I may find thee
Your spots are quite neat
And you have unique feet
“Brush-footed,” they say
No claws on display
What do I care
About the which or where
To see you alight
Is a simple delight

Garden Paths

Peaceful garden stroll
First spring flowers awaken
To sounds of footfall

Monologue

Captured by the folly of my inner monologue;
Incessant chatter, often set on repeat.
Oh, I’m aware of its presence.
I desperately urge it to quiet down;
Else, refocus my attention and attempt to ignore it.
That works, temporarily…
“Just let it go…,” say the mindfulness experts;
Ha!
Tell it to the entity residing in my head.

W3 Prompt #104: Wea’ve Written Weekly poet of the week, Ben Tonkin, prompts:

From free verse to haiku…
This 'folly', be up to you!
Can't wait to read how you do.
Your inspiration is 'folly'.

Sweet Betsy

Native to Southeastern U.S.

I search through my wildflower photos anticipating a difficult time choosing which photo to use in my native spring flower post.  Instead, I discover the difficulty is in finding a “native” wildflower.
